House Of Cards

- an expression for a structure or argument built on a shaky foundation or one that will collapse if a necessary (but possibly overlooked or unappreciated) element is removed.

No news is good news, well, some news might be good, well, nothing can happen unless, well, we need money to, well, whatever. Guess what? Nothing is still happening at the Air Base, ah, I mean Southfield. But Wahey, things are looking up because um, well, I don’t know why things are looking up, but everyone remains hopeful that things are going to work out. Let’s see if we can put it in perspective.

  • LNR Properties owns part of Southfield and has expended money to install some utilities or “infrastructure” as they call it, which means they’ve got a nice fancy new, lighted, painted bike path/ street leading into the Twilight Zone; all without any repayment. What great guys.

  • The Tri-Town Development Corporation who is supposed to oversee the project has allowed LNR to move forward with the Twilight Zone project despite having no money to pay them. (Ya, um, would ya be willin to take 17 million instead of 43 million because, well, we’re good guys.)

  • The Federal Government AKA Navy has no intention of handing over the balance of the property at Southfield unless Tri-Town secures a $30 million dollar insurance policy with um, NO MONEY because they’re ahh, not good guys.

  • The new Southfield Movie Studio has no intention of investing $250 million unless they get a tax credit from the State, the land is transferred from the Navy to Tri-Town and a new parkway is constructed through the property because ahhh, they’re not stupid.

  • Oh yes, and the new parkway (that will connect Southfield directly to Route 3) has been awarded, not to the low bidder of course, but to the second bidder that was significantly higher because, well, um, they have plenty of money to play with anyway, and they’re HOPING to get stimulus money at the end of the summer even though that money hinges on the Navy land transfer; and they’re HOPING to go ahead with the parkway without the land transfer.

  • What about water you say? Ya, forget it. The MWRA, who was supposed to be all in for a new pipeline to be constructed from Quincy through Braintree, has decide to back away slowly because um, well, because things aren’t looking too good over at Southfield and Tri-Town has NO MONEY. But not to worry the Town Of Weymouth, (they’re good guys, err gals) had a study done and they decide that there was plenty of water for Southfield right here in town. Funny but whenever I drive by Great Pond in summer the fish are laying in the mud. How’s that for a water study.
  • My, my, what a tangled web.
